Afternoon walk in Kamay NP La Perouse, and we did see Mercury, Fri 8/11/2024. There was a good turnout for a friday afternoon walk during exam time; maybe examiners tend to avoid friday afternoon exams! There were a couple of minor transport glitches but mostly everything was sorted out okay. And best…

Halloween walk: Dover Heights to South Head & Camp Cove. 31/10/24. The weather forecast for the evening of this walk wasn’t all that good, but things didn’t turn out too bad overall, and the weather did provide some dramatic photographic scenes at times. Most people met up at Macquarie Lighthouse on Old South Head Road around 5pm, and we then set out along the paths that followed the cliff line towards South Head and The Gap. It was…

Halloween walk: Dover Heights to South Head & Camp Cove. With a 30 degree C day earlier (and with a total fire ban), I was wondering what the weather would be like in the late afternoon for this walk. The five of us got to Christison Park at Vaucluse next to Macquarie Lighthouse in a rather cold southerly wind which had developed from a gentle seabreeze earlier that day into something fairly strong and cold by 6.30pm (50 minutes before sunset). In fact…

This was a fairly straightforward coastal walk in the Eastern Suburbs. Everyone managed to get on the 9:45 ferry we were aiming for, with one person just barely making it. View from the morning ferry After meeting up with Terence at Watson’s Bay, we first made our way to The Gap Lookout, before getting back on track to head south towards Rose Bay. The Gap…

First time doing a sunrise walk after Chloe gave me the idea, this was aso a bit of an experiment to see if people would show up this early. Sample size was small, but out of 4 there were 2 no shows (who still haven’t responded to my texts, oh well). We caught the 533 bus without any rush, and reached Bondi by 5:30. Even though…

Hey everyone! This was a trip I had been wanting to lead for a while now since the Fairfax Lookouts were closed for renovation, and only recently got the chance to do so. A number of people dropped out last minute, I had 15 people signed up the day before but that dropped to 8 by the morning. Luckily, Terry…

Sydney introductory walk: Hyde Park, Botanic Gardens, and The Rocks 27/7/2023. This walk was intended as an introductory walk around certain well known (and less well known) sights around central Sydney for members joining in Semester 2. Although only three people attended, it was still a worthwhile walk (after all, we have done trips with only 3 people before and they have been OK). I recall…

Castle Cove view to Middle Harbour and Bantry Bay From the bus stop we met at before the Roseville Bridge, we walked to a bush track that descended to Middle Harbour. After our short walk to Echo Point Marina we entered the hidden track that followed the shore line and exited at Willowie Road in Castle Cove after a number of ascents and descents. We then…

Hallowe’en walk: South Head & Camp Cove. Another lucky break with the weather on my walks, again! Although showers and a possible thunderstorm were forecast for the afternoon, they didn’t eventuate until about 9pm, by which time evryone was on their way home. Also, because of the forecast, the walk was cut short to start from Macquarie Lighthoues at 5.30pm, then further back to start at Watson’s Bay at the same time. This made…

In light of the recent rain, I wasn’t too keen on going far into the bush or doing an overnight walk, so I chose a long and gentle coastal walk that would be safe from the elements. I asked everyone to meet up at Circular Quay at 10 am (mentioned this about 3 times in the emails) to make sure we had enough time to catch the 10.15 ferry to Watsons Bay and was pleasantly surprised with everyone being there pretty much exactly at 10 am. Catching the…

Before this walk, the weather forecast said that there would be moderate showers in the Parramatta area. It was right on the edge for me to cancel the walk or not, so I decided to let the walk go ahead and see if anyone showed up. I texted everyone that it was due to rain, so it was up to them whether they wanted to come or not, and once I got there and waited for everyone, to my surprise everyone showed up! And, it turned out to only lightly rain on the walk, and there were no issues with mud or puddles either! We saw a surprising amount of wildlife on the walk, we saw two plovers (masked lapwing), a colony of flying foxes, a big water dragon, ducks and later ducklings, and other birds too! The river was high today, because it had just rained. I was…

I was nervous that the walk today might not go ahead, because all throughout the day it was pouring down rain. The weather report said that the rain was supposed to clear a few hours before the walk though, so I didn’t cancel it, and the weather report turned out to be right. At the…

The Spit Bridge to Manly walk was indeed an iconic walk. We started at Spit Reserve Park, which is this really pretty park situated on a small peninsula jutting out into the harbor. The path wound through pretty forest and there were several quiet beaches along the way. There were a few lookout points along the walk that had fantastic sweeping views of the harbor! There were two sizable waterfalls, and we saw a few water dragons basking on rocks too! The weather was really nice too, it wasn’t too hot or too cold, and there was lots of sunshine! The walk had lots of little on-and-off inclines, and a surprising amount of stairs. Also, there…

The walk today was supposed to be walking from Spit bridge to Manly, but when I checked the weather forecast a few hours before the walk, all the weather sites said that there would be a thunderstorm at precisely the time the walk was supposed to be. Since not a lot of people signed up for the walk, and the thunderstorm was due to pass in a few hours, I thought maybe I could give rescheduling a go. Since I…

The new Wulugul walk was very spacious and had scenic harbor views. Later on the walk we passed right under the Harbor Bridge and got an unobstructed view of the Opera house. At the beginning of the walk, me and Zoe channeled our inner child and climbed on the big climbing structure that Darling Harbor has, which was super fun! The route: We met at Sushi Hub outside Central Station, then walked to Darling Harbor, across the Pyrmont Bridge, to the newly finished Wulugul walk, Barangaroo reserve, right under the Harbor Bridge, to the Opera house, and then finished at Circular Quay. The walk…

Centennial Park was a really awesome walk. Centennial Park was very spacious and peaceful, with lots of big trees, huge grassy fields and some animal sounds in the air. John mostly lead the way because he had been to Centennial Park before, and we saw a bunch of cool stuff! We had turtles, giant carp, and a bunch of geese come over to us when we walked over to the side of a pond! In another pond we saw black swans as well. The ponds…

The ocean was really pretty today. It was really rough so there were a lot of whitecaps, there were so many waves that it turned the water light blue in some places, and in some places there was a lot of dramatic sea spray when the waves hit the cliffs. The walk I think was more scenic than the Bondi to Coogee walk as well, because the rocky cliffs were more dramatic and it had a less urbanized feel to it. Along the…

The route: We met at the Bondi LIfeguard Tower building on Bondi Beach, and then walked from Bondi Beach along the paved path that hugs the coastline to Coogee Beach. We ended up accidentally running into dead ends twice, but it didn’t take long at all for us to realize they were dead ends, so we didn’t need to spend a long time backtracking. At around…

Originally 10 people had signed up for this walk, but the drop out started soon after midday when a heavy storm struck Sydney suburbs, and eventually 6 pulled out, leaving just 4 people to do the walk. Meanwhile I was in a train from 12.30pm travelling for 45 minutes in bright sunshine and under blue skies as far as Hornsby. The rain…
